CLOSEDOWN, MARCH 29th 2011
It’s time. Or rather, it was time about three years ago and we have only just got around to making it formal.
I’m going out. Might be some time. Save me a few of those Sonic The Hedgehog pasta shapes, if they haven’t gone rotten inside the tin. Thanks for everything, everyone. It’s been character defining.

Blue skies forever!

I always knew the worst day of my life was coming, but I didn’t realise it would be today.
Horrible news.

March 29th, 2011 on 3:19 pm
Should’ve seen the links on the right about Lord of the Rings having been too long and the BBC1 closedown links as a sign really, shouldn’t we?
Especially the (frankly, rather worrying) reminiscing about the good times…
It’s only in hindsight these things become clear, eh?
Does this mean we all have to go out and buy PS3’s now?
Or is there a ‘Kool-aid’ option available?
Enjoy the blue skies outside Zorg.
Switch the light off on your way out.
We’ll be fine.
Don’t look at me.
Just go.

March 29th, 2011 on 3:48 pm
This is the end of an era. Thank you for all these years of occasional laughs, sarcastic grins, and self-ironic smirks.
It’s sad that the games industry has arrived at such a desolate state that even a site whose point was to make a mockery of it has become too depressed to continue its ways. UK:R, along with just a handful of sites like Hardcore Gaming 101, was one of the few remaining bastion of true gaming, and to see it fall is a sorrowful omen.
I’ve become completely detached from mainstream video games by now as well, caring for almost nothing on the market any more save for a handful of outstanding and beautiful franchises such as the Dept. Heaven Episode games by Sting (Riviera, Yggdra Union, Knights in the Nightmare, soon Gungnir), anything by AM2, and to some extent the grand strategy games by Paradox. The blue skies and the fun they embodied have become clouded by capitalism and the ever-present market; the glimpses of the handful of stars still shining above are dimming.
Farewell, Zorg. Video games may be dead, but UK:R will always live on in our rose-tinted memories.

March 29th, 2011 on 4:00 pm
But but but… April Fool’s isn’t until Friday…
;_;
March 29th, 2011 on 4:08 pm
Fuck, first they close down the Guardian talkboards without warning, now this. Idiot Toys is ok though, yes?
[checks]
Phew.
Well, goodbye, UK:R. You’ve been a lot of fun.
March 29th, 2011 on 4:21 pm
Saddest thing is the second that music started on the video, I knew it was the ending tune from ‘Streets of Rage 2’, even though I haven’t played the game or heard the tune in more than 15 years. Brought it all flooding back… and how shit Streets of Rage 3 was.
Anyway, well done Gary. I’ve been reading the site since many years before you even started at Sega Saturn Mag and you’ve brought me many chuckles along the way. I’m amazed you’ve kept it going this long, to be honest, and am glad you’re killing it rather than handing it over to any of the succession of unfunny cunts you’ve let write on it occasionally.
I’ll have a C&W in UKR’s honour tonight. xxx
March 29th, 2011 on 4:31 pm
finally I am immortalised, my Sonic Kite picture is included in the video. Such a bittersweet moment :(
March 29th, 2011 on 4:33 pm
So are we allowed to start up a tribute site and be unfunny cunts on that?
March 29th, 2011 on 4:37 pm
Thanks for all the laughs you gave me over the years Gary.
I mean that in a good way.
March 29th, 2011 on 4:44 pm
Spoiler. Friday.
March 29th, 2011 on 4:45 pm
This does beg the question, where will we all hang out and begrudgenly tolerate each other now?
Idiot toys or bit broken?
I’ll opt for both.
March 29th, 2011 on 4:47 pm
what about a ‘spinoff’ website where we all accept that we’re old miserable cunts and the world is broken?
ukacceptance?
March 29th, 2011 on 4:48 pm
Let’s not get sentimental, boys. Keep calm and carry on, that’s the spirit of the Empire. Forward unto death.
It’s sad but it had to happen, like the death of Old Yeller. Face it, UK:R was sick and it had to be ‘put to sleep’. It was a danger to children and to the public.
Shame though, it was kind of morbidly enjoyable to watch Zorg slowly lose interest in both computer games and UK:R. I have to admit that my own waning interest in the world of games seems to run parralel with what I imagine Zorg’s experiences to be.
I think it’s probably healthier for us all not to have a platform from which to expound bitter ramblings about how shit games are. Let’s all go out into the sunshine and get a bit of Vitamin D, then get threatened by some youths and return home to the internet forever.
Anyway, don’t forget that more importantly you will also lose Weatherbox.
Weatherbox, that shining star, filling your hearts with a sense of pride and your member with a swell of blood every day. Take pride not of yourselves, of course – you’re lowly and you never achieved anything like the mighty Weatherbox – but the sort of vicarious pride people feel when they put a deactivated WWII shell on their mantlepiece.
Just think that for once in your dismal lives you fought besides the majestic Field Marshall Weatherbox on his many famous campaigns.
We are all Weatherboxes now.
EXEUNT WEATHERBOX
FALL CURTAIN
FIN
TL;DR = Sad but fair, Weatherbox no more, you are depressed, you will obviously commit suicide after a prolonged hunger strike damnding the return of Weatherbox, Playstation wins.
March 29th, 2011 on 4:49 pm
That “general feeling of disconnection from the games industry” is what made this site so great.
It’s sad to see it go. Good luck.
March 29th, 2011 on 4:50 pm
MCV are already reporting UKRs closure…so it’s real then…
March 29th, 2011 on 4:58 pm
Right, I’m off home to play fallout new Vegas at night whilst listening to Johnny Bloody Guitar over and over again, armed only with a golf club until the pain subsides.
This website taught me what NSFW was when I looked at the ‘Sega porn’ article all those years ago. I may have even cracked one off over it at some point.
March 29th, 2011 on 5:00 pm
Oh…
Bother.
March 29th, 2011 on 5:12 pm

You will be missed. Thanks for keeping me entertained and my faith alive for all these years.
Good look with the ‘Outside’. :(
March 29th, 2011 on 5:13 pm
I’m genuinely upset at this news, not least because I’ve procrastinated so long with my Dreamcast swirl photos(including my bathroom tiles, an old ironing board cover, and drink placemats at an IT company).
I don’t even know what to say. Luckily Fred West up there captured what I wanted to say so well.
At the risk of sounding like a cunt, will the site still go on but without Zorg(will Phorenzik, Terrier, etc, still be posting)? Of course, Zorg IS UK:R, but I still check it daily. I’d hate for it to just go dead like this.
I’m gonna drink to UK:R tonight. Hopefully I’ll get hammered enough to piss on Sony’s HQ over there out of respect before heading home and playing some old Sega game.
Maybe Sonic 1.
March 29th, 2011 on 5:16 pm
It’s a sad, sad day :(
Zorg/Gary, your site will be greatly missed. I’ll certainly never forget the day a games industry mate sent me a link in 2005 and I then lost eight office hours trawling my way through the archives.
This was in the time when not everyone knew who you were or that you wrote for Official Xbox, so I’d spent video game press events begging more established friends to tell me who ‘Zorg’ was.
Alas that, non-sexual but respectful, union was never to take place – though, if it had, I imagine it would have been better than the De Niro/Pacino coffee scene in Heat.
I honestly intended to write something funnier here but humour escapes me on such a sad occasion.

Good night sweet prince.

I cried when the Streets of Rage 2 tune played. Held it back til then.
Ah shitballs. Anyone got any suggestions for humorous, UK based, romanticizing 90s gaming websites?
Sorry, there’s no need to be that specific. Total Redundancy. Anyone know of any other humorous gaming websites?
The picture at the bottom got me going again.
March 29th, 2011 on 5:41 pm
@bilal – I don’t know about Phorenzik, but I find myself locked out of the site’s dashboard, so that’s it for me. Time to move on to pastures new.
It’s probably for the best that it just ends anyway. UK:R without Zorg wouldn’t be UK:R. :(

I think rather than having people other than Zorg still putting stuff here, it would be “better” for one/some of us to start up an ill-advised and poorly-conceived site called “UK: Revival” which attempts to recapture some of UK:R’s greatness and carry the torch for the next 15 years… Only to give up on it after a couple of weeks once everyone realises that it’s a pathetic shadow of this once-great institution.
WHO’S WITH ME?

I’m locked out from posting content too. Which will no doubt please some.
I wouldn’t want to post anything here without Zorg posting too.
This place is Zorg’s and it always has been/will be
I only offered my posting services in the first place because I could see the end coming and I thought I could help Gary get his passion back. It’s easier to bounce off someone (from an ideas point of view).
I always felt privileged to be able to post, and I was always aware that not everyone would accept anyone other than Zorg posting.
I never tried to take over, I just wanted to help to keep the site I love going for that little bit longer.

March 29th, 2011 on 6:37 pm
Thanks for everything, Gary. I think I might very well be as fed up with the “games industry” as you are, but the pain was so much easier to bear with UK:R still taking the piss at Sony.
You’ll be dearly missed. )C:

Today, we lost a great general in the war. I may have appeared to mock this man from time to time, or appeared to have a grudge against him due to a pastry marketing based incident several years ago, yet a great general he was.
Remember this day, people. Remember what this man has done for the cause.
…But this is not the day we sink into the night, never to be seen again. The resistance must go on.
WE WILL NOT FADE INTO THE DARK.
WE WILL NOT LET “THEM” WIN.
WE MUST CONTINUE UNTIL WE WIN, OR APATHY CLAIMS US ALL.

One last group wank for old time’s sake then?
March 29th, 2011 on 7:17 pm
As a young’un I was a Mega Drive fanboy. So naturally, I agreed whole heartedly with this site’s cynical view of the current state of gaming. So much so that I went full on “blue skies” and SEGA nostalgic rebellion with my artwork of an indie game. If anyone wants to see the art direction, here’s a trailer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dbrhb1bIcDA Sorry if that seems like a shameless plug, and hell it probably is (though it’s not out yet so there’s nothing to sell), but dammit I’m trying to show how this site’s attitude inspired me – and hopefully others – to get into games and make them a happier, nostalgic place. This is indeed sad news, but in a cheesy, yet optimistic way, its message will not be forgotten. Or something…
March 29th, 2011 on 7:22 pm
The closure of this site kinda ties in with my recent experience of reading a 360 magazine and just skipping vast segments of it as it was mostly shit shooter after faggy fantasy game. As a fan of racing games and stuff by Rockstar, I’m rarely catered for in the modern gaming market. Oh for the days when a Mega Drive and Road Rash was everything I ever wanted in life.
Still, I couldn’t bring myself to buy a PS3 for GT5, so take some pride in stopping me from sleeping with the enemy, Gary. A big thank you for running this site, too. My life would have been much emptier without that whirlwind romance we all shared with egg monoe.
March 29th, 2011 on 7:34 pm

“Zorgy played guitar (hero)

and the rest of UK:R
he typed it left hand, he blogged it too far
became the special man, then we were Zorgy’s fans
Zorgy really sang, swirled up eyes and swirled down hairdo
Like some ‘cast from Japan
He could lick ’em by smiling, He could leave ’em to frag
They came out well loaded man, not hung with wanker’s tan.
So where were the readers, while the spod tried to beat our scores
Just the red ring to guide us,
So we bitched about his updates and is it just a bit bland?
Zorgy played for time, telling us it was poo poo
The PS was just crap,
He loved the ‘cast, with god given apps
He couldn’t look at 3, it really was wii wii
Making love with his DC, Zorgy sucked up into his mind
Like a gaming messiah
When the kids had killed the man he had to break up the gang.
Zorgy made Uuuuu Kkkkk Rrrrrrrrrrr”

I knew you said it was coming but I really never thought it was. I have been a read for over 5 years now checking the site regularly. It is very sad to see you go. You have provided me with some great highs and now a massive low, alas I shall remember the good times. I am a student of games design and had one day hoped to get a game I worked on featured on this site and ripped apart, sadly that dream will never come true.
Thanks UK:R, thanks Zorg, thanks everyone who posted. I only hope we can some how find another community somewhere as great as this.

I’ll never forget the first time I found UK:R, sometime back in 04-05, when I stumbled upon the Dreamcast bike on Google.
I may very well be the youngest person that regularly reads UK:R, but I too am disconnected from the modern game industry. It was nice to have a place where I was in good company, but all things must end eventually, I guess.
Oh well. I’ll play Streets of Rage 2 in honor of UK:R in a bit, followed by the Sonic R soundtrack on repeat for the rest of the night. See you on the other side, Zorg.
March 30th, 2011 on 1:48 am

Damn you, bitches, for making me register on yet another social networking/blogging site, even if it’s only to say goodbye.
I like to think that it’s at least partially due to UK:R’s hard work over the years that we’ve had so many versions of Outrun 2 to play and that we finally got Afterburner Climax on XBLA. And even you had fuck all to do with it then your constant bleating about blue skies in games certainly improved my enjoyment of them, and for that I thank you

You know the more I drink the more I can see this is really all for the best. How lucky we were to serve under such a benevolent master who at least took the time to post notification that the dream had ended and didn’t just tell us all to suck it while they went off to work for Sony like Sega did.
I really thought the parting video was never going to move past that shot of Richard Jacques. I still think you could have held it for a few more seconds though. Some of us are not as quick off the wrist as we used to be. And well you know it.

I was here since nearly the beginning, certainly before the Dreamcast was released, when I was still at school. I had a numerical CompuServe email address back then, I dare say – that or was using the original Demon Internet, when they were still good.
Genuinely saddened that a near-constant source of comedy for the last 15 years has finally gone. Thanks for the laffs, and good luck with the future.
March 30th, 2011 on 9:27 pm
I can’t believe it :( My heart is so heavy, oh god it hurts to breath, what have you done Garry? Make it stop. PLEASE!
I used to be too poor to own a PC so I first got online with the Dreamcast and subsequently ran up a BT bill for £200!
I’m sure I first visited UK:R after reading about it in a DC magazine about which sites to visit on your Dreamcast.
Farewell UK:R and thanks for the laughs everyone, the comments really helped make this site.
March 30th, 2011 on 10:21 pm
I first came here in 2001. Like stevemy, I could only get online with the Dreamcast then, being from a poor, feckless, working class background. I can’t remember it really apart from all the red. Perhaps I found out about it from Official Dreamcast Magazine too (I only bought one copy, ‘The Internet’ meant I stopped buying any mags). Didn’t become a regular until four years ago when I was bedridden with AIDS of the spine for six months. (I recovered… Albino blood).
I used a different name every time I posted then as it was prior to the Nazi invasion that prompted Zorg to require us to log in. Stopped the dickheads, lowered the amount of comments. Hope you’re happy, dickheads. On the plus side, it means there is some provable trace of my existence rather than posts that may or may not be me as I can’t remember what name I put or what I said.
I disagree about the future looking bleak though. Thinking games have gone crap is just a sign of growing out of the hobby. It wasn’t better ‘in our day’, that’s nostalgia and should be vigorously resisted. I’d trade gaming for books and chickens any day of the week. Well, books. I’ll be honest and say I’d rather keep gaming than keep chickens. Luckily this dilemma is never likely to arise.
Anyway, it was fun until it stopped being fun. I shall peruse the archives, reading all the hilarious posts that had ceased years before I joined. I’m proud to be vaguely associated with the dying incontinent years of the site when the same regular few names posted over again and again because everyone else had seen sense and stopped.
Bye-bye!

Thanks to this site, Spiel definitely did Macht Frei.
Giger, any room in your Billy Hatcher for the gang? We could man the DC2 launch from there, easily.

“All those moments will be lost in time… like tears in rain… Time to die”
Which writer used that quote in the last issue of SSM?
Does anyone else feel the similarity?
March 30th, 2011 on 11:15 pm
Tragic news. Another in the the coffin of good times from the glorious past.
March 30th, 2011 on 11:47 pm
First time commenter, 5+ year reader. Sorry to see you go Zorg, i shall miss the dry humour and general depressing funniness of your blogsite. We have resisted long enough, now we give into the mundane shiteness of new gaming.
March 31st, 2011 on 1:27 am
Long time reader and I’m sad to see this go.
I salute thee.
March 31st, 2011 on 2:17 am
The resistance is over
March 31st, 2011 on 2:21 am
Now seems as good a time as any to post those Sonic juice stickers I’ve been meaning to send in: http://i56.tinypic.com/iz3tqo.jpg
March 31st, 2011 on 4:28 am
Fine, I’ll just bin all these spiral photos I was saving up.
:(
March 31st, 2011 on 1:18 pm
Nooooo! *sad face*
So long and thanks for all the disturbing updates!
Blue skies forever.
March 31st, 2011 on 1:33 pm
Been lurking here for at least ten years. Great times. RIP.
March 31st, 2011 on 2:00 pm
This news had literally reduced a grown man to tears of utter disbelief.
I am honestly mortified to discover that what I consider one of the most important games related websites ever to exist is closing it’s doors.
Although to my now utter embaressment I have never posted here, I have been an avid reader for more years than I care to admit.
You’re outlook on the industry and humour filled updates have kept me in good spirits throughout some of the darkest times in my life, and for that I shall be eternally greatful.
I’m sat here utterly aghast, if the situation ever requires it I will personally pay for any domain and webspace costs to keep this archive site up at it’s current domain.
Your absent but most adoring friend,

P.S. I am wanking as I type this.
March 31st, 2011 on 3:44 pm
I’ll never forget the time a video of me playing Virtua Tennis with a fishing controller was featured here and someone in the comments described me as a wank muffin. Good times!
Gonna miss this site, though A Bit Broken is giving me just as many good laughs.
March 31st, 2011 on 8:39 pm
Bugger, I’ve actually been having to work at work for the last three weeks and I completely missed this happening, except for an ominous looking tweet from DickSocrates (hopefully pronounced as Bill&Ted would pronounce it). I’ve loved this site since I found it some/many/5/10? years ago
Good luck Mr/Emperor Zorg/Gary
March 31st, 2011 on 11:01 pm
Fond memories of the wiki vandalism too. I remember adding Come to Daddy by Aphex Twin and the Minder theme to the possible tracklist of Singstar 3 among others.
Farewell UKR, I’ll be looking back at the archives of UKR in ten years like I do with Digitiser.
March 31st, 2011 on 11:33 pm
Please keep updating the sidebars… Mr. Zorg sir… even the tiniest faintest hint of a pulse is making me still visit the site.
So who’s getting to work on a Phoenix site then? I quite liked most of the updates the new batch of people were doing…
April 1st, 2011 on 12:15 am
Fuck me, anyone hear about the DC2?
April 1st, 2011 on 12:21 am
OK, I admit I bought an N64 as well :(

What would Captain Jax say about all this?
or is he still occupied with Unit 26’s vacuum pump?

It’s April 1st now. You can start posting new stuff again. Please?
April 1st, 2011 on 12:02 pm
Well, shit.
Still, looks like there’s still the mini links-blog at least…
Oh yeah, while I’m here, thanks for all the kind words for Bitbroken folks, much appreciated…talk about pressure, getting a good feeling for how Zorg felt about keeping this place running…
April 1st, 2011 on 12:18 pm
It’s so sad! UK:R was the perfect expression of what videogaming is, nowadays, for our generation. I hope you’ll keep doing A bit broken and Idiot Toys with Giger.
April 1st, 2011 on 2:03 pm
I’m just a mere German but even I was able to recognise the greatness that was UKR. Thank you for this spot of sanity in the wasteland that is the modern games industry.
April 1st, 2011 on 2:08 pm
So would the Commander be adverse to a site that tried to carry on the great work of UKR?
April 1st, 2011 on 3:16 pm
If anyone starts up a bitter gaming blog/site then I’ll volunteer my (occasional) posting abilities.
I’m no where near the levels of Zorg (I know) but I’m just as jaded about the industry so it’s a start?
April 1st, 2011 on 4:30 pm
I wouldn’t advise anyone to start up a site based around saying everything is shit. For a start, not everything is actually that shit, plus only saying negative things all the time is pretty tiresome.
Remember, UKR started with the vision of a Utopian future where the Saturn was the dominant console and we would be kings and there would be a new Daytona USA every 18 months.
You need a positive element, I think. Even Charlie Brooker has to occasionally admit he likes something.
April 1st, 2011 on 4:50 pm
This makes me far more sad than it reasonable should. Good bye and thanks for it all.
April 1st, 2011 on 5:06 pm
A blatant attempt failing to see the point of UKR in the first place
Co-contributors welcome, to call me a massive cunt.
Commander, feel free to tell me to shut this sorry excuse of a site down
April 1st, 2011 on 5:40 pm
Hey Captain Whoops, I can’t log in to notuk:r. WordPress keeps shakin’ it’s ugly head at me.
April 1st, 2011 on 6:40 pm
Why start something new? We can keep posting here forever.
FOR-EVER
Closing the site was just the boost it required.
April 1st, 2011 on 6:51 pm
and we will keep posting here forever.
Think of it as a pale shadow of a glorious whole, a pale shadow with the occasional blue swirl…you know you want to…

I dare you to not shed some tears on account of the beauty and the sacrilegious nature of what you’re seeing. Watch in 720p if your computer was made within the last six years.
Take comfort from Sony not making any money from it.
April 1st, 2011 on 8:02 pm
I’m genuinely quite saddened by this. The internet just won’t be the same. Thanks for the years of entertainment, the shirts and the Cephscope link.

A very sad day. Despite UKRs golden years being long past the internets will not be the same with it.
Maybe now my spiel macht frei t-shirt will actually become a valuable momento, I will wear it with pride.
April 2nd, 2011 on 11:24 am
Long time reader. Infrequent poster. Mainly because I always found the quality of the comments to be top notch and I can’t muster enough of the required vim and vinegar due to prostate problems.
Incredibly sad day for websites/writing/video games, but I hope you feel more enthused (or at least less catatonic) about whatever you move onto Gary.
To everyone else, I hope our bitter paths cross again. I don’t know a website that has comments quite like this one, the culture here was special/shit.
Love you all.
April 2nd, 2011 on 2:34 pm
What’s that catchy music in the video from anyway? I went through some Sonic games’ end credits on http://www.gamethemesongs.com/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_3_-_End_Credits.html but couldn’t find it. Thanks in advance.
April 2nd, 2011 on 3:00 pm

@bilal have you got Dreamcast swirls to share with the world?! For goodness sakes man email them to things@notukresistance.co.uk

April 3rd, 2011 on 10:28 am
Okay, thanks.

Goddammit.
As soon as the site closes I start seeing SEGA stuff everywhere.

[…] A few days out of date, now, but this is worth writing about anyway. UK: Resistance has officially shut up shop. […]
April 3rd, 2011 on 5:10 pm
Incidently, did anyone ever manage to wank to completion during the end credits of Streets of Rage 3 when that picture of Blaze pops up. I know I did.
April 3rd, 2011 on 11:50 pm
Christ no matter what the last ever post is it’ll either end up being about egg monroe or wanking… or both…

Captain Whoops – I’m sure if you asked nicely Zorg would happily send you on all the junk I sent him that wasn’t good enough. I distinctly remember a period when I was seeing spirals every-bloody-where. May want to clear a few gigabytes of space first.
That’s assuming, of course, that the “specific holding area of my desktop, filled with folders of all your junk” that Zorg always referred to wasn’t just the recycle bin.

April 4th, 2011 on 12:47 pm
So everyone is in fact still here then? Any chance of a monthly update Mr Zorg sir? Just so as we don’t have to scroll down so far.
April 4th, 2011 on 2:37 pm
Good idea GigerPunk, there may be some tasty stuff in amongst it.
Did everyone who registered on notukr get their passwords OK?
April 5th, 2011 on 2:09 pm
I’ve been checking this site for over 6 years, but over the last ~3-4 months I had completely forgotten about it!
So isn’t it rather ironic, that as soon as I remember about UKR again, it was closed down? Pretty much on the same day?
Perhaps we share a special connection…
It’s been a pleasure, all good things have to come to an end, just like the computer games industry. Or life.
Let’s meet back here when the Dreamcast 2 is released yep? Or Shenmue 3 perhaps?………. :<
April 6th, 2011 on 2:27 am
Very sad news. Thanks for all the laughs Zorg, it’s been a pleasure. Cheers to all the stand-up commenters and contributors too. The archives will continue to serve as a goldmine of SEGA related crap. I was honoured to have something I sent in featured once. One old personal favourite update was that Dreamcast chicken thing. Blue skies forever!
April 6th, 2011 on 12:37 pm
Thank you Gary. I’m sure it didn’t always feel worth it, but you brought me some laughs, and for that I am grateful.
Sleep well, sweet prince.
April 6th, 2011 on 4:06 pm
Thanks for all the laughs Zorg. I’ve never felt the need to post here, but I’ve been reading on and off since UKR started and you’re one of the funniest guys on the net – I’ll miss the site.
I started a site a few months back that I’m looking to build up and find some contributors for – anyone’s welcome to submit material and there’s no specific subject either. It’s just for laughs and It’s no UKR, but it could be up there one day with a little help/love/hate.
http://www.meccanobravado.co.uk
Need to figure out how to make a scrolling background using Headway for a start….
April 7th, 2011 on 12:20 am
Are you all still here?
Would you all just drink the fucking Kool Aid already?
April 7th, 2011 on 4:29 am
This is a rather pathetic end. Granted, it’s been a bit of a waste for a few years now, but why not do the proper thing and throw up a forum on this domain? Don’t you know that having users generate content themselves is the way to run a successful website these days? Let us post our own damn swirl sightings.
April 7th, 2011 on 5:45 am
Everything was so laid back then. I don’t remember the interludes that much but I remember the testcard with the girl and the clown.

There’s some swirls as well.
Keep breathing, it’ll all be OK.
April 7th, 2011 on 11:09 am
You shall be missed, Mr Zorg, just like Sega Saturn Magazine. I was hoping we’d all live to see the day Burning Rangers 2 was released and Scud Race was ported to home consoles.
Thank you for inspiring me to spend the best part of a decade on and off trying to write a decently funny games blog, instead of living life like a normal human being.
Lots of love,
– Matt
April 7th, 2011 on 11:36 am
Still can’t believe this, I keep checking back to see if it’s all a joke, utterly gutted.
EXTRA BIG CRYWANK! ;-(
April 7th, 2011 on 4:16 pm
Benji, I’m not sure that a forum in which an ever-dwindling number of people post in-jokes is really the way forward. But if enough people think that’s a good idea I’d be happy to assemble something.
Probably best to use one of the already-existing ones, though.
April 7th, 2011 on 7:01 pm
Part of UK:R’s ‘thing’ was how no one ever directly addressed anyone else. It was all ‘I think this’ as if no one else had posted. A tradition proudly carried over to notukresistance and Twitter where past UK:R regulars continue to barely acknowledge one another’s existence for fear of genuine human contact.
So a forum built on those narrow and hunched shoulders may not be the runaway Broadway smash one might hope for. Plus, out of the hundreds of people who suddenly professed long term love for UK:R, only about seven posted regularly and I wasn’t even one of them in the past few months.
Not saying it shouldn’t be tried, just being a realist-humanist-atheist with a degree in dream crushing.
April 7th, 2011 on 8:05 pm
What’s “Twitter”?
April 7th, 2011 on 9:59 pm
What’s “Existence”?
April 8th, 2011 on 4:38 am
I would still like to submit some sort of update once every six months or so.
I’m in this for the Sega side. Not an undying love of Sega as such, but the decline of the company often presents profound parallels with the disillusionment I’ve felt toward many things I once loved in my life.
In posting content I would find great comfort in acknowledging that Sonic the Hedgehog wasn’t so great after all but admitting the colour palette of the Marble Zone is still very nice. It tells me the world may not as good as I remember it but there is still some good out there. Somewhere up Ulala’s skit I suspect.
April 8th, 2011 on 4:43 am
I meant to say Ulala’s skirt (unless skit is some new slang for vagina.)
April 8th, 2011 on 9:03 am
Thanks for the laughs.
Good luck to you man.

Only just become aware of the sectarian split that is notukresistance whilst working on a documentary chronicling the last days of the church of UK:R and what will undoubtedly be known to the history of ideas as ‘First Wave Zorgism’.
I won’t be joining this institutionalised revision of the Zorgian urtext, much as I know you want me. I truly believe I have lost my faith.
How can you not lose faith when the lord Zorg himself could be best described as agnostic for the last few years of UK:R’s ideological dominion? Let’s face it, our cause has been valiantly consigned to the graveyard. We all fought bravely, and our evangelical missions brought light and blue skies into the darkest corners of savage Playstatonia, if only for a short while.
But the system has been deactivated. It is not safe for us here now, comrades. The old man has been toppled. We must flee the land! The prism through which we deviated the light of blue skies remains opaque for the irreconcilable masses. The fierce sediment of Hollywoodesque violence and rubbernecking is refracting our blue skies into a dismal grey.
If one day whilst rambling in the hills of Siberia you chance upon a wooden shack with a fibre-optic cable leading up to it, enter ye and we shall talk of the old cause and sup vodka. But still thee thine lips when we part ways, for your ancient tongue is a serpent to the new grass.
Let us not dwell on what could have been. We are old men now, let the young blood boil and then we shall watch it evaporate as did ours. We are the stagnant heritage of time’s passage.
Blue skies no more.
Now, if you will forgive me, I must depart. I am told the Zeppelin has been cleared for exit. I shall see you in Paris, if you are not taken. God speed, comrades. I wish you the best of luck if you choose to stay and fight, though I think you are foolish.
Goodbye.
April 11th, 2011 on 12:01 am
Riiight…
He could still set up a forum so we can talk about how wanking isn’t what it used to be right?
April 11th, 2011 on 8:33 am
Sad times indeed :(
Another regular viewer and (very) occasional commenter here. Seems I’ve been making regular trips here for at least the last five years, there were some great times but sadly this seemed to be on the cards for quite some time, just never thought I’d actually see it happen.
Good luck in whatever you do Zorg, you’ll be missed.
April 11th, 2011 on 11:52 pm
Ah shit I’m always the last to know.
Zorg, thanks for cheering me up for many many years! And also hats off to the regular commentators who cracked me up many a time.
If you are by any chance considering suicide I’d recommend against it, however. No-one will really care, so even that won’t work.
April 12th, 2011 on 10:39 am
Still plenty more of the lapsed once-a-month crowd to roll in and express mild disinterest.
April 12th, 2011 on 12:06 pm
Shit, this has just floored me. I’ve been a frequent visitor to this site since the late 90’s. I’ve always loved Sega since I got a Mega drive for Christmas with a copy of Sonic The Hedgehog. Though they fell by the wayside a decade ago this site always seemed like the last bastion of false hope. I suppose there’s not much you can do with a Sega fan site though when Sega seem intent to move as far away from the company we all love as possible.
Maybe there’s an alternate universe out there where Sega is still releasing hardware, focusing on making quality titles with their IP’s and still giving away free games whilst sticking two fingers up at Sony. Maybe as well arcades are still popular so home games are still vibrant and full of colour and original instead of the market being full of “gritty” contemporary war fps’s.
Thanks for keeping the site running all these years Zorg, I’ve loved reading your stuff from even back from the SSM days.
Now I’m off the cry a little whilst burning the PS2 copy of Crazy Taxi. After that I might donate to whoever just released the SOR Remake. Fuck Sony, Fuck present day Sega.
April 12th, 2011 on 12:22 pm
I’ve come late to the non-party.
So long UKR. Thanks to all, even Weatherbox.
I too learned what NSFW was here, long ago.
(I did got my PS3 though, and I really like GT5. Don’t play anything else any more. Sorry. Sad face)
April 12th, 2011 on 6:25 pm
Hey look! A comment from Zorg!
It’s like this place isn’t dead!
(after keeping this place running for 15 years, you’ve only got yourself to blame for all of us constantly exhibiting false hope)
April 12th, 2011 on 8:49 pm
I’ll try to pretend I have other things to do.
April 13th, 2011 on 10:05 am
Like having the wind sucked out of your sails, it is, albeit it was bitter, cynical fumes at the end. But that’s what was great about this place. It was all my infectious, immature fanboy-ism run amok with all the talent and poison of U.K. invectives doing the running dialogue. This place was my British Isles, though I’ve never visited there, and running rampant was this kingdom of SEGA “football hooligans.” It was a good wank for the inner spirit.
And now it’s done. Been lurking from the late 90’s. Loved the good fight for an unfairly malign Saturn. And never signed up to say anything because as a Yank I know when I’m outclassed for a fight to the bitterest of ends. (We’ve picked up a new tradition: it’s easier to pick on small groups who can’t fight back!) Can’t carry the SEGA fight with reasoned debate or conciliatory gestures, and in a land where only safe pop culture topics are discussed — usually tepidly in comparison — I was out of practice. When you can’t add to excellence, it’s best to subtract yourself from being in the way.
You’ll always be my team SEGA ultra fans, UK:R. And because of you I’ll always have an internal vicious Brit slagging the half-assed shite of tomorrow. Now to find too much non-domestic beer (‘cuz ours tastes like horse piss… don’t ask) and get right blitzed.
April 13th, 2011 on 4:24 pm
I can’t be the only one who remembers the original UK:R forum. Never in my days have I seen such a cunt soup of bitter, petty old men, bickering away for years after the link was removed from the site. Nobody needs that, surely.
Zorg, thanks for finally shutting the fucker down. I’d been wondering on and off for a few years now when I’d get around to finally killing the link from my bookmarks, it was clear you didn’t give a shit about the site and wouldn’t pretend to either. At its prime it was the funniest gaming site around, bar none. It was gold. Thank you for that. I can’t remember the last genuinely amusing post, though, the last time it felt like you’d put some effort in. This death has been coming for years.
Bookmark deleted. Time to move on.
April 14th, 2011 on 5:59 pm
Persuading Mr Zorg to start a website about Sega was probably one of my better achievements in life. Live long and prosper Zorg. Any chance you could unlock the cell door now?
April 16th, 2011 on 2:13 pm
That email of yours suggesting some sort of Sega Saturn news site on our free Demon internet web space was life-changing. I’d still be a washer-upper in Cornish pubs without it.

NEWS FLASH April 16th, 2011 at 2:13 pm.
You heard it here first, and straight from the top – Sega are releasing a new console, apparently code named the ‘Sega Saturn’. Zorg has confirmed he is going to start some sort of internet web space to keep us all up to date. Something about a demon that will change our lives. And someone needs to do the washing up.
Stay tuned.

Comments still going!
Joined out of sadness and to say was awesome site, followed for years – kept me sane for a while.
And I thought some of the later posters were very good – Phorenzik and friends etc.
The other sites are still funny/very funny whoever is responsible.
Thank you all

Sorry FloppyLob, they were waxing goddamn nostalgic, circa 1996.
*sorry for the double

OK, well I might as well post something, being that the comment count is so near to 200.
So many memories tied up in this place… and I only found it in 1999.
Personal high points:
Repeatedly making a dick of myself on the forum and mailing list (remember the mailing list?) by trying far too hard to impress and fit in with the games journos and other industry types who hung out there.
Getting my first ever paid freelance as a result of talking on the forum about wanting to write for magazines. This would lead me on a magical and crushingly low-paid path of full-time mag jobs.
Having one of my Fujitsu-Seimens-promotional-archive-fuckabout images posted, back in the days before the ‘blog’ format took hold, when space was at a premium.
Bagging a Gmail account way back when they were invite only, by responding to someone’s “I’ve got some invites” post on the forum. I beat the crowd by pretending to be female. Understanding the psychology present in an environment is often the key to success. I didn’t even say thanks, and I use the account to this very day. Wow, that’s a load off – been carrying that around for about seven years. Maybe now the dreams will stop.
Favourite posts (that I can remember):
The ‘never be honest on the internet’ one.
Jobs for paedophiles: swimming instructor
GamesTM Outrun screenshots.
The reviews of all the 360 magazines.
Every employee of the week, ever.
Trip to Peckham (and the responses).
And of course… this
Thanks Gary.

Why is ‘A bit broken’ still beta? is it a bit broken?
April 19th, 2011 on 3:47 pm
Everyone still here then? Can’t find another suitably jaded corner of the internet where you can weep into your wanking tissues that isn’t closed?
Glad it’s not just me then. Even gladder it’s not just Weatherbox!

It wont be dead until the comments stop.

Don’t rattle his cage BirdMode. I’m not sure this page can take another wall of text.

Balls. This also forced me to join and get a name aka “handle”. Maybe I will start a blog about commenters who appear only after the blog closes. Then when that closes a few months after being lazily updated, I can… Oh fuck it. Only zorg is proper funny. Pissing closed down boggin’ sega fansites. Ooh, don’t worry all! IGN was a ripping retro site! Time for a trouser off!

Oh bum. I only went out for [looks at watch] 24 days. Think I’ll have a Dreamcast and Tissues day as a sign of respect. Out

Wait, is this that site where the British guy does game reviews by talking really fast over a yellow video? Those are AWESOME!!!11

I strongly suspect that regular commentor ‘Trilby’ might have had something to do with that…
I still come here every day. Probably because it’s my homepage.
Sigh.

PSN hacked. Sony admit failure.
Surely this calls for an emergency UK:R update?
We’d settle for a Peckham update or an employee of the week.
Some swirls?

Number of Dreamcast games you can currently play online: 6. Number of PS3 games you can currently play online: 0.
That’s exactly the sort of thing I expect to find out from UKR rather than having to actually pay attention to some bloke’s twitter feed.

I’m a much rubbisher Trilby than that other one, sadly.

Now we know why Gary had to step away from UKR. He had to take the fight where they live!

This is better than that time those PS3 touts were hanging by their belts.

Is it in the papers? Please say it’s in the papers (and not just Metro).
April 27th, 2011 on 9:31 am
Commander, Update immediately!!! You’ve got to give it the proper treatment.
April 27th, 2011 on 9:42 am
If it’s on the front page of anything more authoritative than Metro it might be worth one last HURRAH-HA-HA-HA.

I’m a little (a lot) late to the party here, but I ironically did not find out about UK:R’s closure of transmission until the one-last-hurrah post about lolsony came up on my Twitter.
This is truly a sad day for all of us. To quote my friend, “gaming is now officially shit and over”. I can’t help but agree. UK:R meant a lot to me. I don’t want to seem womanly and sentimental, but this event has made me feel womanly and sentimental.
Thanks for the good times, UK:R. You may not know who I am, but you’ll always have a special place in my heart. To quote a good friend whom I once linked to one of your articles, “Sonic and photos of women? You must come here a lot.” It’s true. I do. … I did.
:(
Keep the blue skies alive, everyone.
THIS IS HOW IT ALWAYS ENDS.

[…] If there’s one good thing to take away from the whole PSN debacle, it’s that seminal satirical blog UK Resistance has been re-activated after closing down in March. […]
