ANOTHER FAILED SONY FORMAT STRIPPED FROM BARGAIN BIN PLAYSTATION3
The new, downgraded, slap-in-the-face-of-Europe, 40GB PlayStation3 has had its SACD support binned as well. Now while losing SACD support is about as worrying to us as losing ITV1 from the terrestrial TV listings, it’s still quite interesting to look at the parallels between SACD and Blu-ray.
SACD was released when CD was as the top of its game. Everyone owned 100s of CDs, everyone loved CDs and the sound quality of CD was perfectly good enough for 99.9 percent of the population. So Sony released the slightly better and completely incompatible Super-Audio CD – the Blu-ray of the music scene. It is now a dead format, as is its rival DVD-Audio. Everyone was happy with what they already had.
Now, all Sony needs to do is bin that awful, pointless, half-finished HD movie format they’re trying to force onto an unwilling world in the same way.

Wow, Sony is almost releasing the system everyone told them to release in the first place. They cut the price by getting rid of that CD thing and cutting down the HDD, and they put rumble back into the controllers.
My prediction:The PS3 will be the system to own for Christmas… of 2006.
Too bad that compared to the budget PS3 the 360 looks like a steal now, plus the 360 also plays videogames. Also, the Wii plays videogames and costs less than that again.

Shit. My prediction should read:
This PS3 will be the system to own for Christmas…. of 2006.

Eventually they’ll get the specs down to Dreamcast level and release that.

I love the jab at ITV1. Or as it should be known, ‘The Chav Channel’.

Still no news on Tekken 6? As long as they don’t take out the extra sweat processors I’m going to keep buying them.

You used my link!
I remember SACD. My dad asked about it, I told him it’s by Sony and he changed his mind.

At least ITV1 has You’ve Been Framed with that cheeky Harry Hill chap. I’d rather watch a thousand videos of grandad’s false teeth dropping out of his mouth and children falling over at weddings than play ten minutes of Lair or Heavenly Sword.
awghnyc – Awgh, NYC! If only I’d gotten this one on September 11th.

Add that shitty Mini Disk format to the dead list also…
October 10th, 2007 on 1:41 pm
Good lord yes, MiniDisc. One wonders if Sony has an entire department given over to pointless new technologies that drop off everyone’s radar within three months of launch, then crater the following year having sold one third the projected number to a minority of imbeciles — sorry, early adopters — who’d buy horse shit at £399 per tonne if the buckets it came in had Sony stamped on the rim. I reckon it’s some sort of elaborate tax dodge.
And hahahaha Cunzy11, another Tekken 6 reference.

Don’t foret Hi-MD, which could have been better than any iPod if only the players didn’t die after a month…

To be fair (yes I know, pointless here), I think there is a market for a High Definition video disk format, the only mistake they made was not agreeing on a format as they did for DVD. They will have to work on combining the two formats (as they effectively have on DVD±), as neither blu-ray nor HDD are going to survive while the other exists (like Harry Potter)

The funeral was simple, there were few mourners.
As far as I was aware, the main “attraction” of SACD and DVD-A was surround sound (4.1/5.1) music. Which, apart from anything, required music to be recorded/mixed appropriately.
You might have accidentally bought an SACD, there were a few titles released on hybrid SACD/CD. Think the biggest selling one was Dark Side of the Moon.
October 10th, 2007 on 7:46 pm
To be fair, Dark Side of the Moon sounds pretty damn cool on SACD surround. And Blu-Ray movies do look really really cool, they’re the only thing the PS3 is worth buying for.
October 10th, 2007 on 8:33 pm
I’m almost certain Dark Side of the Moon sounds best when it’s being played on the end of a Black and Decker drill…

IIRC the biggest draw for SACD (for sony) was its improved copy protection,
You dont want your users making copies of the CDs they have legally brought,
The courts wont allow you to covertly install spyware on their PCs,
“Make a new format!!!!11!”

It’s funny… I always thought the whole “bashing-Sony” thing was because they were in first place, as opposed to being outsold by a white GameCube.
Y’know, since bashing the guy at the top is funny.
Well, it SHOULD be.
On paper.
Didn’t this site used to have something to do with Sega..?

If you were involved in World War 2 would you quit killing Nazis the minute they started to lose just because you didn’t think it was as fun anymore? UKR isn’t about just knocking first place. UKR is about erasing Sony completely from history. Then I imagine they’ll start on Nintendo. Then finally Microsoft. Then everyone will be as dead as Sega and we can stop crying ourselves to sleep.

This promotion just tells the basic truth about how the PS3 and 360 match up…..

You forgot to mention Minidisk, another SOny format that bit the dust within a couple of years of being released.
tsk, do your research!
