GTA IV – THE TRUTH WILL OUT
Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. Sony fanboys have been desperate for a ‘technical edge’ to boast about since the PS3 launch and IGN’s review of GTA IV was it. Briefly. Unfortunately, the “subtle, soft warmth” of the PS3 version turns out to be the SHOCKING revelation that the game only runs in 640p and can’t even manage any anti-aliasing. That means it is doing close to 30 percent less work just to maintain its lower-than-the-360-version-framerate. Cue lots of forum comments from PS3 owners along the lines of “Oh, well I prefer the soft, hazy, blurry look anyway” etc. Now you know why all the publicity shots were from the 360 version. Next.

been watching my lodger play it on his ps3…there is so much slowdown in certain situations, its laugable. Best news of the year so far for me.

It’s a blood shower of PS3 fanboys in public cognitive dissonance.

wow… are there any other sites reporting this? IGN etc have nothing.

630p actually, with super post-processing vaseline. I read one post somewhere that it is so blurry on the PS3, that he can’t even play it. Also the gamespy servers are jacked. Meanwhile the reported texture pop-in on the 360 version is hardly noticeable.
Looking forward to some free roam later with UK:R’ers!

640p? Don’t you mean 480p (which conveniently sounds even more laughably unimpressive)?
April 30th, 2008 on 8:32 am
Isn’t there a little square graphic on the side of this page that says “No Gangs in Games”?
Surely UK:R should be scorning all versions of GTA IV for putting the Blue Skies in Games campaign back another three years as a thousand cash-in urban cliché clones are greenlit.

“Isn’t there a little square graphic on the side of this page that says “No Gangs in Games”?”
I agree, it should be replaced with ‘More Cabaret Acts in Games’! Going to cabaret/comedy clubs in GTA4 is honestly my favourite part of the game.
Ever since the master system RPG days where you’d go into some kind of bar, and there’d be a cute little sprite dancer on a stage who danced for about 5 seconds to a tune if you ‘talked to’ her, I’ve always loved watching shows within games. I’m glad GTA4 is raising the bar. Watching the magic shows in the Russian cabaret, in particular, is more entertaining than most ‘real’ magicians I’ve seen.
I demand more of this in gaming. It might not be ‘blue skies’, but it’s certainly ‘casino night’.

So the PS3 version has the worse frame rate? I thought IGN said the PS3 version’s frame rate was better? Oh wait, IGN said it. Never mind!
Sony claimed they’d sent their best engineers to Rockstar to help with the PS3 version. It seems all they managed to do was turn down the resolution and disable the anti-aliasing. Another victory for Kutaragi’s power house…
April 30th, 2008 on 12:05 pm
Final verdict is ‘640p’ not 630p or 480p.
Of course there’s no such thing as 640p, people are just incapable of talking about resolutions any more.
It’s running at 1152×640 with no AA and being software scaled to 720p on the PS3, and running at 1280×720 with 2xAA on the 360.
The 360 version seems to have some unpleasant dithering artifacts showing up because of its shadow handling though.

You lose me with this technical duelling.
Is the PS3 version shit? If so how shit? And on the shitness scale of shit, is it shitterer than other shit that’s squeezed through Sony’s shitter?
Thanks in advance,
April 30th, 2008 on 3:53 pm
In order to grasp just how shit it is you have to imagine a shit, which is itself taking a shit. A shit’s shit if you will. Now imagine that shit in turn taking a shit.
Now imagine this process continuing for the period of time between when Sony first claimed a Playstation would be able to render Toy Story quality graphics until the time when one actually will be able to.
The final shit in that chain is a rough approximation of how shit GTA IV for PS3 is.

One of the buffoons at work was complaining about his PS3 version being a bit on the crippled side as soon as there’s more than one colour on the screen, apparently the slowdown is quite something.
I told him it’s simply fabulous on the 360, everyone else agreed, then we collectively called him a fucking mug and stole his shoes and broke his calculator.
The fucking mug.

didn’t the PS3 peeps laugh at Halo 3 for the 640p thing?
April 30th, 2008 on 11:11 pm
Halo 3 is 360’s posterchild, though. GTA being 640p is neither here nor there I think.
Now, if GT5 was 640p, that’d be more like it. It probably is, too.
I think 640p’s hilarious no matter what game has it, cos they always get caught out by that guy with a ruler

I don’t want to get all fanboy about this but GT5P is proper 1080p.

John, don’t worry as that comment doesn’t make you sound like a fanboy at all (although I’m guessing you secretly want to be one)….it just makes you look like someone who has written a post in the wrong thread. e.g. plonker

I’m too busy surfing for eastern european porn to be a fanboy.
Wrong thread? I was responding to the comments made by bilal a couple of posts up about GT5 on the PS3. Try reading all the comments. Your eyes must be giving up due to too much masturbation ;-)

Where’d hide all the UK:R Gamertags then? Mine’s Wrestlevania, cunningly.
I need more fellow UK types to be shot in the teeth by…
