SEGA EUROPE ACHIEVES SELL-THROUGH OF 500,000 DREAMCAST CONSOLES IN TWO MONTHS
Internal SEGA Europe communications from 1999 EXPOSED! Dreamcast launch “six times” more successful than that of PlayStation! Happy New Year wished!
“Not wanting to feel left out of the ex-Sega Europe people showing off the free Dreamcast tat / rare collectibles that we got given, I thought I’d show off this lovely letter I received from JF Cecillon and Miyake back in Christmas ’99. I can’t remember what the special bonus was, but it might have been a £3 book token” – Anonymous.

Jean-Francois’s aim is hopeless, might as well cover his fist in ink and thump the paper. Kaz Miyake’s not much better either.
No wonder Sega failed in Europe when their leaders can’t hit the target.
Should’ve had a German CEO. He would have signed in the designated area or made sure the word template provided adequate room for his monogram.

Sega sucks, Sonic was only good for three games and all their other franchises are terrible.

I’m telling you, 2000 is going to be their year. I can just feel it.

Shit, that thit was 9 years ago….Dude, I need to get a DeLorean and head back to 99 and stop that twat Peter Moore making that vital call to SOJ…..We can not let the DC fail !!

What were they selling them through, a big funnel into a skip?

I hate to sound like a teenager, but… “LOL @ Trilby”

Your arithmetic is a little off. If it took $ony 6 moths to reach the sales that Sega reached in 2, that makes Sega 3 times more successful, if you measure success in the sales per month.
or something.

Why are the names below the signatures misaligned?
Dude doesn’t know how to use tables on word, it seems.

I remember a news report (proper news on the telly!!!) showing the DC’s launch and stereotypical blond teen wankers in shell suits saying how they are waiting for the PS2.
Sony must die.

I haven’t stopped sobbing since Zorg posted this item.
The death of the Dreamcast is is one of the worlds greatest injustices.
The hurt never goes.

I feel guilty, I waited a couple of years and picked up my first DC for £99 with about £200 worth of games and joypads and stuff thrown in at its death from toys r us.
then got another brand new one for £20 from HMV after randomly asking if they had any DC stuff left in stock. they denied having any but i could recognise the blue box that was their doorstop.
its all my fault…

maybe if they hadn’t wasted all that precious money distributing frivolous gifts to employees, they would have had enough to keep out of the red long enough to last to this console generation, where the dreamcast 2 would have ruled supreme. we all know that microsoft could only afford to make the 360 riding on the sales of jet set radio future and shenmue 2.
and along with Tomleecee, i too was one of those 500,000 dreamcasts. a decision i stand by regardless of the way things are now, similar to veterans of vietnam.

Sadly I wasn’t part of the 500,000, but only because I’d imported a Japanese DC at launch. It even came in a fetching orange box with pictures of some Sega executive on it (I think it was part of their launch ad campaign). It’s still plugged in and used even today.
Sony must be purged from the Earth with fire!

I like the way people are going a bit Marcus Porcius Cato, who ended his speeches in the Roman senate with “..and furthermore it is my opinion that Carthage must be destroyed”
And furthermore, it is my opinion that Sony must be destroyed!

I remember getting my DC & all the promises that the little LCD memory card held…but sadly never delivered…. my heart is still broken..

I love how everyone blames Sony for SEGAs hardware pull-out, yes Sony played their role, but it was SEGA themselves that dug the grave, even though it still pains me to admit it.
Anyone up for PSO?

Jumbo Bollocks is quite right, the death of the DC is far worse than the Irish potato famine. There are spuds harvested in Ireland now aren’t there, and yet where is the Dreamcast mark II? Plus if the Irish could afford to emigrate, they could afford to eat in a modest restaurant (Alan Partridge … Sega Saturn man, I’m sure!!)
and although I do hate I sony, I really hate sodding EA a lot more. They supported the Saturn with their duff shit like Soviet Strike, and yet when it came to the Dreamcast where was ‘need for speed’ etc. I couldn’t give a rats arse that they didn’t publish for the DC myself, but to the industry it was seen as the kiss of death.
It’s worth buying any old shite published by Ubisoft just because I know it must annoy someone at EA towers. Still they learnt some humility, they released Spore packed to the gills with DRM.
Sega will have vengeance.
I hope and prey that if Woolies do go tits up Sony is their number one creditor. Filling their shelves with Blu Ray discs has seen a cherished retailing institution get kicked in the fanny. Grrrrrr Sony, is there no end to your evil ways.

I remember what the special bonus was now. It was another letter with a similar “Merry Christmas to your family” ending delivered just 2 years later.
It was a brilliant exchange really, your job for a pile of cash!
