ALEX HAS A PLAN FOR SEGA
It’s a plan for SEGA to make a new Daytona USA. He has thought it through extremely well and provided links to back up his reasoning.
Hey guys, love the site. With regards to the Blue Skies Campaign, we may be on the cusp of a major triumph. It seems like EA is no longer interested in the NASCAR license.
http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/25/eas-nascar-exclusivity-in-question-sim-series-on-hold/
What does this mean? Well, the International Speedway Corporation, owned by NASCAR’s France family, owns the Daytona USA trademark. They used it for a tourist attraction at the Daytona International Speedway, but the name was changed recently.

My theory here is that if SEGA grabs the NASCAR license, they can FINALLY have the means to make a new Daytona USA game, and they can probably team up with Image Space Incorporated to make a PC NASCAR simulator.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_Space_Incorporated
Everybody wins!
Here’s what we do. We go on Sega America’s twitter and nag them to get the license.
http://twitter.com/SegaAmerica
I did my part, and they said, to quote, “sorry, can’t say one way or the other.” They didn’t deny it outright, so this is the time to strike! Help me out and soon enough, we could have the greatest moment in the Blue Skies Campaign! LET’S DO IT!
BY WAY OF AN APOLOGY
Here’s a shit-load of screenshots we’ve taken of the arcade version of Daytona USA running under that Model 2 emulator.
The Model 2 emulator is awesome. Very nice. It runs perfect, even on the cheap mass-produced computer that powers UKR.
The latest-generation UKR “Con” is powered by a Core 2 Duo E8200. There are three “gigs” of RAM in it, plus whatever Dell’s default cheapest graphics card was six months ago.
Adam Doree can’t get it to work though!
ADAM DOREE: “My PC is really precarious at the moment – I can’t afford any crashes or reboots as sometimes it decides to take FIVE CUNTING HOURS to successfully boot, so I have to wait till that’s sorted before revisiting the M2 emu which crashed me last time. Er, does this sound right though? The Daytona ROM I have is only 14.5MB? That can’t be right surely?”
Yes, Adam, it’s right.
It also runs SEGA Rally perfectly and anything else you can find the ROMs of.
There’s a bundle of Model 2 ROMs on the torrent sites.
We’ll probably have to explain to Adam Doree how to find those as well, if he ever gets a PC good enough to run it.
We never dreamed we’d be able to (a) play Daytona USA all day for free or (b) take screenshots and examine its glorious textures.
We only selected “Manual” for the purposes of taking this screenshot. In actual play, it was automatic all the way.
Offramp! What does that even mean? We’ve spent all morning reading the textures of the cars. Screenshot #5 up there shows a car sponsored by a record company called just “Records.”
That car is sponsored by SG8. AM2 was too busy making the world’s best-ever driving game to have meetings where it spent all morning thinking up clever names for things.
Driving up to Jeff is also a good way to spend an afternoon.
We’re not doing very well. It’s hard setting up the controller to work satisfactorily. That’s the only complaint.
Sliding, probably by accident.
Angular seagull!
Crash ahead!
Horses! When you’re playing for free, wasting a go by driving off the track to examine the surroundings is an OK thing to do.
SEGA was pioneering environmental power generation even in the early 1990s. That sky texture would make a lovely background for a blog about games, wouldn’t it?
Get it. Press F12 to take a screen grab. It dumps them in a folder automatically. Away you go.

My PC is from 2002. Do I stand a chance of it working, or am I stuck with Doree in the third-world?

Yay, Daytona USA emulator news…
I only mentioned this 6 FOKKING weeks ago in the comments and now you take credit for bringing it to the attention of 5 people that visit the site.
You are a gay. A big gay. I am going to report you to the port authority for publicising warez.
March 4th, 2009 on 5:35 pm
Well. If it’d be that easy. The Nascar / Daytona license costs a fuckton of money. That’s probably why Sega decided to never make a new Daytona game nor port the old Daytona to PS2 (Sega Ages) or similiar.
March 4th, 2009 on 6:35 pm
What started out as potentially the worst update ever in the history of everything, was turned around brilliantly by the use of Daytona USA screen-shots.
Screen-shots which I could look at all day long while singing “Rolling Staaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaart” to myself continuously.

Google images now has even more Sega awesome-ness to go along with the set of Sonic CD screen shots from a while back thanks to Zorg.
10/10.
BTW, again get Blogger or whoever runs the RSS thing to have it fixed. Its like the old days of teh intertubes where I have to manually check for updates. Teh h0r0r!!!

Beautiful, just beautiful. Oh, to recall the hundreds of hours of my youth spent chasing horses on the Saturn version.
March 4th, 2009 on 9:19 pm
Hrm… Exactly when did this become a ‘blog’ and not a website? Was it when you started writing updates that people were interested in?
March 4th, 2009 on 9:39 pm
This site was a blog before there ever were blogs, when you think about it. All it was missing were the instant comments.
March 4th, 2009 on 10:13 pm
I wasn’t really on board with this “blue skies” thing, but the Daytona screenshots have jarred my tired grey matter like the passing wisp of an old lover’s perfume. Now I remember, like an Epsilon briefly reaching the roof in Brave New World, we once had sky. And it was brue. Brue, brue skies. I see.
March 4th, 2009 on 10:28 pm
I don’t think that driving up Jeff is a good way to spend an afternoon because my name is Jeff (well, Geoff which is the proper way to spell the name) and I don’t want people driving their way up me anytime soon or at all.

Angular seagull!

That’s not the latest version of the emulator, it has better colours!
March 5th, 2009 on 1:05 am
As much as I enjoy being able to play the original arcade Daytona, I think I still prefer the first Saturn version the most. For starters it’s easier, although to be fair to the arcade version the emulator offers no facility to configure the dead zone on an Xbox 360 pad and so the Hornet twitches like an ageing crack whore who hasn’t turned any tricks for a few days.
The other thing is the Saturn version just has such precise handling, whereas the arcade version feels quite woolly (but that could be the 360 pad again). The Dreamcast Daytona is pretty good too, but I don’t really like the handling of any of the cars.
March 5th, 2009 on 7:52 am
Hey Yu Suzuki, Shen Mue sucked and was boring as shit. The storyline was gay. The sailors were gaaaaay. Driving the forklift was the only good thing (and looking at people’s letterboxes). Who gives a fuck about someone murdering someone’s father. Rubbish. Stick to racing games you can’t tell stories for shit.
March 5th, 2009 on 8:07 am
It’s honestly wishful thinking. Given how shit Sega Rally on the 360 is, I doubt an updated Daytona could be good. I want to fry high in broo sky as much as the rest of you, but I feel CCE on Saturn really can’t be topped here.
Also, as someone else noted, the NASCAR/Daytona license is retarded expensive, and any tracks aside from those owned by Daytona Racing have to be paid for separately. That’s why the EA games don’t have the Montreal 200, because Gilles Villeneuve is too fucking expensive.
March 5th, 2009 on 10:12 am
me like
March 5th, 2009 on 11:03 am
It wouldn’t need the license to be a spiritual successor. Daytona was the height of SEGA arcade excellence. Apart from the pretty dire scud racer they let their prize asset slide. Shame.
March 5th, 2009 on 11:36 am
Can someone make this emulator for Xbox 360 so I can play Virtua Fighter 2 please? I bought Virtua Fighter 5 in the hope it would be good but only managed to play about three fights and haven’t touched it since. Thanks.

Sega Rally on 360 is god made silicon. I Believe In Sega Racing Studio.
March 8th, 2009 on 12:40 am
Was not even aware the France family owned ISC too. Given when EA’s exclusitivity deal kicked in, this almost perfectly lines up with how the series just abruptly halted after 2001.
I don’t think the rights will be as expensive as you might think – NASCAR’s mentioned they’re considering letting MULTIPLE publishers take a slice of the pie (like it used to be) after EA’s contract dies. Further, we know how much NuSega™ likes their big dividend licensing deals, and if i’m not mistaken Toshihiro Nagoshi is still employed in the building. So, like, wow.
If anything, there needs to be a Daytona article on Hardcore Gaming 101 and fucking pronto.

They died already. Codemasters have them now. I will only be satisfied when SEGA buys them back, or the whole Codemasters.

I was wondering what was up, if you guys got the e-mail. I’m glad you guys did. This is the best chance we have to get a new Daytona USA game, and I don’t want it to slip away.
Of course, it also helps to support OutRun Online Arcade. I’m going to do that. No lie, I’m ready to QUADRUPLE dip- I bought the Xbox version of OutRun 2, the PSP version of Coast 2 Coast and I currently have the Xbox version of Coast 2 Coast. I can’t wait to own you all online. ^_^
