RIGHT SAID FRED AND SOME OF SEGA’S MARKETING MONEY
Cocaine. Prostitutes. Pub lunches every day. Arcade machines set to freeplay in the reception area. There was nothing SEGA couldn’t afford during its early 1990s domination of the Western Hemisphere.
It bought Right Said Fred’s very small amount of dignity, using it in this horrendous video production:
That’s your favourite band. You’ve got all their albums. You’ve even got a limited edition Japan-only CD that had two bonus remixes.

Right Said Fred never had any dignity

April 30th, 2009 on 4:23 pm
Ironically, Egg Monroe would be a perfect alternative name for Right Said Fred. You know – because they’re bald.
Maybe their mum. That makes more sense. With alopecia.

God I love that, yes I know its rubbish but its so bad its good.
April 30th, 2009 on 5:07 pm
huge point in history. I think this 3 minutes and 41 seconds was the EXACT pin point moment when in public eyes SEGA went from mega drive era greatness and loyality to saturn era disgust and hatred. seriously. i enjoyed the saturn and of course the dreamcast, but in PUBLIC view, this is the moment it went from being really cool to like SEGA, to being the WORST thing EVER. if SEGA was a country, this video would be like a nuclear weapon blowing up in the centre of it.
the band. the song. the people in it. all awful.
April 30th, 2009 on 5:45 pm
Well, I enjoyed the inherent 90’sness of the video and music.
Oh how I want to go back. Please, just let me go back…
April 30th, 2009 on 6:43 pm
I remember those adverts with the skull and that fat shit. It’s Spudgun, right?
April 30th, 2009 on 6:46 pm
In fact, no outside validation needed; that IS Spudgun.
But yeah. Nice way to turn a blatant homo-pop tune in to an anthem for a child’s icon. In a child’s mind, mind.
April 30th, 2009 on 7:32 pm
I remember those heady days, all the kids were doing the hopping-while-holding-another-man’s-hand dance in the playground the next day and talking about how cool SEGA were.
Of course I may be thinking of an alternate reality that NEVER ACTUALLY HAPPENED AT ALL.
April 30th, 2009 on 7:54 pm
Why do you guys hate on this so much. I mean those guys are trying there best.
April 30th, 2009 on 8:53 pm
@Frederick – That’s no reason NOT to hate something. I mean, I’m sure Hitler was just trying his best.
Not that I’m implying this is on the same level as the holocaust.
But not so very far off. It is basically the gang-rape of sega and sonic’s credibility, orchestrated by people paid by sega and very, very awful.
Took me a while to realise there are bits where you’re supposed to be seeing things as if through Sonic’s eyes. But only if Sonic was a terminator. Cos that makes sense…
Anyone know how much cheap gin it takes to erase the memory of that video?
April 30th, 2009 on 8:59 pm
I totally agree with whomever it was that said it captured the essence of the 90’s. The decade that gave us GamesMaster, Bad Influence, GamesWorld,.. [to name a few] and of course SEGA Pirate TV.
Great ad campaign. It worked perfectly for the era. Targeting the cool ‘yoof’ culture of rebelious young adults. Something Sony did later with aplomb with it’s PlayStation push.
Great update Zorg. Cheers.

The blond bint that squawks “He’s just a flippin’ ‘edgehog, Okaaaaay?”..
..Would. Even if it’s sloppy seconds from Sonic.
May 1st, 2009 on 2:24 am
are the people who say this worked perfectly for the era actually insane? this was the exact moment attitude changed to pure HATRED for sega! the only way this worked perfectly was to turn every person in the world AGAINST them! and no no no this was not the VERY ESSENCE of the 90s! right said fred was a joke in the 90s and is still now. i cringe watching this now just like i cringed when i first saw it, it is utterly awful. to the person who said about gamesmaster and gamesworld, YES that is the 90s, but this video is if you took the feel of those games shows and combined it with the most over the top gay parade ever. what ever floats your boat….

May 1st, 2009 on 9:28 am
I actually have this single (U.K. version) which I bought in a US store for $1.
May 1st, 2009 on 12:24 pm
I didn’t even make it to 1 minute.
I liked the way RSF pretends to shoot himself in the head at the start tho. He’s obviously wise beyond his years.
May 1st, 2009 on 12:42 pm
Agreed. This was pretty much the point where Sega went for genuinely cool to shockingly crap.
The marketing department at Sega Europe has a lot to answer for. Right Said Fred?!?
May 1st, 2009 on 1:52 pm
So, what you’re saying is that it was Right Said Fred’s camp music and dodgy promotional video that killed Sega? And nothing to do with the Meda CD, 32X, Saturn and Sony’s mid to late 90’s dominance?
OK.
May 1st, 2009 on 4:55 pm
To use the North American ‘rap’ vernacular which is becoming more common amongst the ‘cool’ kids… “Fuck you, all you motherfucking haters.”
I couldn’t give a gnat’s knacker if they were shit-stabbers or not. The reason -for the zillionth time – that Sega was hated was due to the handling of the Mega CD, 32x and Saturn. Loyal customers that payed good money believing in their product was left abandoned when they (Sega) felt their product wasn’t gaining enough market penetration and installed user base.
SEGA: “Hey, we know we fucked up. But this time with the Dreamcast it’ll be different. C’mon, whadya say huh?”
JoePublic: “Sorry but you don’t get it anymore. Sony understands us. They know we’re the cool demographic. PlayStation is for cool adults whilst Sega’s for sad little kids. We had some great times but, now’s the time to move… [sob] on.”
Traumatic memories for all those who gave a shit. Nothing a little therapy wouldn’t sort out.
May 1st, 2009 on 5:40 pm
Mega CD and 32X and all that rubbish all came out within months of this crap song being spewed from RSF and his idiot parade. of COURSE it was the 32x, etc that KILLED sega, but the thought process (yeah yeah lets release hundreds of addons with no support, what a great plan) began with this UTTERLY HORRIFIC video.. It is of the same deluded logic.. which did actually destroy SEGA.
so yes the thought process which decided Right Said Fred’s camp music and dodgy promotional video was a good idea, and later on decided to release utter crap with no support did kill sega.

It would have been better to offer the Fairbrass bros the cyber razor cut, but instead get it mixed up with the chainsaw head cut. That would’ve turned an increasingly bleak outlook around sharpish.
