YET ANOTHER BLOODY DREAMCAST GAME IS COMING OUT
It is called Sturmwind. We suspect that’s German for Storm Wind. It’s about horizontal alien attack and looks surprisingly OK, especially as its Wikipedia entry says it was originally meant for the Atari Jaguar CD.
Here’s the official trailer.
And here’s the press release, so we can say we’re still supporting the people who do this sort of thing even though we think they’re actually just a bit mental:
Recently, redspotgames revealed their latest Dreamcast title on “neues,” a news program on the German channel 3sat. There Max Scharl, CEO of redspotgames, presented Sturmwind for Dreamcast for the first time, including scenes from the game. But aside from a few clips in the background, this announcement was largely comprised of screenshots rather than video.
Since then, Sturmwind has been the recipient of wide-ranging international media feedback. The interest in this Shoot ‘em Up for the last Sega platform has taken hold not only in the Dreamcast scene, but far beyond. redspotgames has been thrilled to receive such interest from outside the target audience.
Now redspotgames, an indie publisher based in Munich and Duranik, a two-man developer team from Erlenmoos, Germany, present the official Sturmwind trailer on their YouTube pages. The trailer features several levels as well as some of the game’s impressive bosses. It has also been revealed that the environment is completely destructable and that the game will feature vertical scrolling sections in addition to the horizontal. Sturmwind is still on target for a Q2 2011 release.
Preorder can be made at http://www.redspotgames.com/shop. As the publishers note, payment is not required until Sturmwind becomes available.

Freaking awesome! So… why did we need “next-gen” again?
December 23rd, 2010 on 1:53 pm
I’m shit at these side-scrolling space shooters. I think the closest I can get to being able to play these is completing level 15 on Frogger.
December 23rd, 2010 on 2:41 pm
Looks good. Why it’s coming out on DC at the time the indie game scene is massive with titles regularly coming out on 360, PS3, Steam or just on their own website, I don’t know.
December 23rd, 2010 on 2:54 pm
@Weatherbox I’m utterly terrible at shooters too. I don’t have the brain power to keep up with all the little dots flying about the screen. This game will need to have a super-easy mode if I’m going to buy it.
Graphics look stellar though, more like something the current gen consoles could do.
December 23rd, 2010 on 3:55 pm
Ooh, looks purdy.
Still, €35? Unsure what that is in ‘real’ money but probably more than I’d want to pay, I’d suspect…
December 24th, 2010 on 9:30 am
Must be from some pacific island where they don’t know the Nintendo-Sega war isn’t over yet.
December 24th, 2010 on 9:44 am
I WILL probably buy this or I will PROBABLY buy this, haven’t decided yet. What’s €35 anyway, a tenner or 50 quid? More importantly will I be able to part-exchange it in Computer Exchange? I haven’t been in one of those for years. Do they still pump out death metal at a ridiculous volume? One day they’ll get wise and start pumping the smell of warm bread into their shops to make people buy more.
Can’t wait for the Eurogamer review wot wiv all there long, complikayted words.
Needless to say, I had the last laugh.
December 24th, 2010 on 11:56 am
€35?! There’s no sense to this. £10 on XBLA would have earned them significantly more money, had lower overheads, and more than 5 people would have heard about it (with only 1 of them going on to buy it).
THIS COUNTRY.

Merry Christmas fellow UK:R inmates. Hope you’re all having a wonderful time on what is traditionally the worst day of the year.
December 25th, 2010 on 1:34 pm
I’m pissed already. Good times.
December 25th, 2010 on 4:45 pm
Surely for us lot Valentines day would be the worst day of the year?
December 25th, 2010 on 9:38 pm
Captain Whoops – I can’t comment on Computer Exchange as I don’t think they’ve ventured into South Wales much (used to be one near Cardiff bus station but I have a car so don’t go round that way much), but Gamestation in the St David’s Centre in Cardiff seemed to be employing some Greebo crusty who must be in it just for the free clean t-shirt. He smelt awful, even worse than than my previous boss’ breath, and he smelled like he’d been felching dead goats.
I bought my IRL-friend Psybernoid a copy of PES’08 for PS3 as as joke. It was only 48p but the gits removed the price sticker which was half the joke :(
Still, should’ve seen the look on his face when he unwrapped it.
48p? Priceless.
(I did get him another semi-sensible game as well, I’m not that much of a git of a friend)
So, how many turncoats here got PS3’s for Christmas, eh?
And how many would’ve rather’d socks?
December 25th, 2010 on 9:39 pm
Is rather’d a word, btw? Unsure.
Faculties impaired. Too much port.
December 25th, 2010 on 9:55 pm
Sounds like a word Shakespeare would approve of. So I will say – yes.
December 26th, 2010 on 12:02 pm
yeah Cex by cardiff bus station is still there and still smells so bad in the summer that they have to open the doors at both ends of the shop.
I don’t go in there anymore seeing as they don’t even do old game boy games anymore and all their other 2nd hand stuff is stupidly overpriced.
I also bear a grudge against game and gamestation in st. Davids for not hiring me when I was unemployed.
Instead when I went in there a few years ago to buy the new sam and max game they gave a funny look and kept telling me that that the wii game was the first in the series … idiots….

As we’re on the subject of computer game shops before they evolved as a species into the family-oriented media emporiums of today, I remember when my local GAME was an Electronics Boutique, and the Nintendo section, in contrast to the shelves of white plastic periphy common today, consisted solely of a small stand littered with a few cut-price N64 cartidges in tattered cardboard boxes.
And yes, as memory does, I find myself reflecting upon the smell of the place. It had a leaky roof at the back (probably shortly before EB went into administration looking back on it so repairs were always unlikely – the landlord probably wanted those fucking nerds off of his lovely high-street property), and the water brought to life the sorts of smells you might expect a computer game shop circa 1998 to contain.
I can’t identify each component, but remember just a confluence of bodily aromas, like a humid wall of human odour that filled the lungs with dense, filthy air.
I also once bought a box of anime VHS from a bald man who worked there and knew a friend of mine from school. It was a confusing period in my life.

Fuck, boxing day is boring.
Anyone know what’s on the internet today?
I wonder if kids will actually say that in the future.
December 26th, 2010 on 4:23 pm
I doubt they will say that in the future as everything that currently exists is always on the Internet at any time. So nyah, fuck you, ruined your Boxing Day, didn’t I?
The ‘fuck you’ was a joke, I only genuinely say ‘fuck you’ to my neighbours. ‘Fuck you’ is worse than ‘cunt’. ‘Cunt you’. No, doesn’t work.
CEX sell used mobile phones now. No more import N64, Saturn and DC games (not least because it’s 2010). The staff there were cunts anyway, so I’m glad I don’t ever have to go back into one. Clique of ultra cocks with dirty alternative turquoise hair. At least the one off Oxford Street (Rathbone Place, if you want to go on a Dick Socrates tour of London.) Ease of travel to Camden and Shoreditch possible explanation.
Speaking of bearing grudges for not being hired, I did actually apply to work at that CEX (because I’m an idiot and briefly experimented with the idea of being employed). Memory still painful despite being over 10 years ago. The guy asked me questions like ‘name 5 games by Bizarre Creations’ and ‘Who made Metal Gear Solid’. Pre-hipster hipster Fucker. All their fault of course, nothing at all to do with my social retardation.
December 26th, 2010 on 5:11 pm
That was (part of) the joke, that there being a finite schedule for what’s ‘on’ the internet would be impossible and useless.
As for boxing day, it was ruined the moment Back to the Future or the Goonies wasn’t on. Can’t bring myself to put the DVD in, but if they’re on TV and I ‘happen’ to watch them, I can justify not doing something better with my time.
December 27th, 2010 on 2:20 am
Kinda missed the opportunity to update on Christmas eve. Please consider doing one on New Year’s Eve (do you capitalize this?) or people will think the whole depressed middle-aged man is just a front while you happily celebrate all important events with a large flock of friends and family. I am sorry, I didn’t meant to criticize you. I’M ALWAYS THIS AWKWARD
December 27th, 2010 on 7:58 pm
Should we implement a UK:R forum?
There, I said it.
That way, instead of exchanging offhands remarks about how shit computer games are we can recommend games that are actually good and stuff.
Go on, you know you want it. We can still talk about how shit everything is, and post pictures of sonic tat and stuff. Also, it’ll give Zorg something to trawl on a slow news day.
December 27th, 2010 on 8:11 pm
I mean offhand not offhands
December 27th, 2010 on 8:52 pm
Sounds good. There’s lots of free ones out there to use. I think.
Wasn’t there a forum before though?
December 27th, 2010 on 9:58 pm
*Vein on forehead expands to size of golfball*
December 27th, 2010 on 10:53 pm
Yes. Yes there was. I believe it still exists somewhere on the boards2go server and has since become the place where all the coolest Russian spambots go to hang out and talk about viagra and penis pumps.
I too hold a massive everlasting grudge against Gamestation et al for not giving me a job and instead hiring a never ending string of slightly “alternative” teenage girls that the manager obviously wanted to fuck (or in the absence of teenage girl applicants, their greasy, bad metal loving mates). Cunts.
December 27th, 2010 on 10:55 pm
Terrier, you do it all!
I nominate you, so you should feel pretty special and proud and eager to please me.
Was there a forum for UK:R? If there was I never saw it. link? was it from the early days of the site then? Maybe we can rejuvenate that old jalopy with some new Java spunk.
Get on it Terrier!
December 27th, 2010 on 11:12 pm
Just realised that this forum is actually still in use and has a group of people posting there.
Just so we’re cool, I didn’t mean to diss your forum.
December 28th, 2010 on 2:48 am
I wonder how many games will be made 10 years after the start of the current generation of consoles.
Probably heaps for PS3 because maybe after 10 years they have a decent userbase.
Probably none for 360 as they will all be dead by then, the consoles not the users.
just received my limited box edition of eternal arcadia and going to wrestle my way through that this end of year time.
December 28th, 2010 on 4:00 am
I don’t know what’s going on but I’m definitely up for exchanging some ‘offhands’ with other users.
December 28th, 2010 on 11:41 am
My token effort.
Go wild. Or don’t.
