WHEN MEN FOUGHT AND DIED FOR THE CAUSE

A man failed to win the proper prize, but was given these promotional Pirate TV “dog tags” for simply being brave enough to take part. SEGA – always giving comfort to the downtrodden.

“I appreciate that what with the SEGA world being the newsworthy place that it is today, you don’t have many slow news days. But just in case you do ever find yourself in such a situation, here is some random SEGA merchandise for your perusal.”

“When I was a kid I went to the Bristol Balloon Fiesta, and there was a SEGA bus demoing Sonic 2 and the Mega CD. There was a speed compo on Sonic 2 and needless to say, I didn’t win. But I did get these amazing Pirate TV dog tags.”

“One of the pictures has 1 English pound for scale. I used a pound because it was nice and shiny, like Sonic’s rings :(” – Anthony.

READER’S MUMS

Incorporating Reader’s Podgy & Under-Exercised Legs.

sonic june 1996

“My friend told me to email this over to you. This is what life looked like under the last Conservative government. I spent many hours digitally masking the faces using the latest in ‘big white square’ technology. I have two more photos, but the technique is very tiring. You may only be interested in the t-shirt, but the overall compilation of the shot – from the contrasting shades of green, to the menacing fence in the background – deserves special praise.

“This is irrefutable proof that I was leading the charge against Sony’s evil PlayStation brand long before UK:R joined the fight. Shame on you. Oh, and don’t bother looking for any metadata… USB was only introduced five months earlier, and didn’t gain any serious traction in the marketplace until 1998” – Jon.

SONIC STICKER ALBUM COMPLETED WITHOUT “ANY OUTSIDE HELP”

If we have done this before, we haven’t done it in this much detail or with this much backstory attached to it – so THE UPDATE STANDS.

sonic sticker album 2

“I was just putting a few pics I took up on my blog and thought I would take a few more and pass them on to you, so they can be used on a slow news day when people tire of ash clouds and oil prices.”

sonic sticker album 1

“Not sure if you have covered the Sonic sticker album before but here’s the pics, I know some people ‘love’ Amy Rose, so that’s sure to be popular.”

sonic sticker album 3

“Also it’s not a complete book so if you have any of the ones I’m missing then don’t hesitate to pass them onto me.”

sonic sticker album 4

“The photos were taken with a Sony cybershot dsc-w180 camera, for folks who drool over that type of information. I used many of the cameras features when trying to artfully take the pictures, such as flash on or flash off.”

sonic sticker album 5

“Note on the puzzle page I hardly made any mistakes and I didn’t need any outside help.”

sonic sticker album 6

“Also before I go, I hope you don’t mind if I put up a link to your page, you never know what type of weirdos frequent the pages of a rarely updated blog tho” – Garry.

sonic sticker album 7

Man called Garry? Weirdos? Rarely updated blog? Photos of SEGA things?

sonic sticker album 8

Sorry, Garry, we don’t have any of the ones you are missing.

sonic sticker album 9

Even if we did have they would’ve been burned in the Great Ceremonial Burning of 2008, which saw everything that didn’t sell on eBay destroyed.

sonic sticker album 10

That’s a nice piece of artwork, spoiled by Sonic looking much too worried by a minor collection of non-threatening badniks.

sonic sticker album 11

Have you still got the MEGA PULL-OUT WALL POSTER, Garry?

sonic sticker album 12

Robotnik’s confused here because he’s sure he packed the matches, but now he can’t find them so there’s no way to light the disposable barbecue. He literally spoils everything.

sonic sticker album 13

We would’ve saved the best one until last, but none of them really stood as as being best.

PHOTO RETOUCHING WASN’T UP TO MUCH IN 1995

Model’s body rendered by Model 2 arcade board, face handled by Saturn.

Sent in by “Andy” as a mere afterthought in an email mostly about the faces of businessmen for elsewhere on the network.

FROM THE ARCHIVES – MEGA CD PORN

If you weren’t sitting on that same chair staring at that same wall while reading this same site 10 years ago, you won’t have seen this. No idea why she’s getting so excited by the cheap second-generation redesign:

mdporn1

Don’t remember where it came from. Probably from “the internet.” Those memories have long since been overwritten. The computer says the image was last modified on July 15th of the year 2000.

“VINTAGE” SEGA MAGAZINE ADVERTS

Not sure we agree with the vintage classification chosen by the submitter, as that would mean we’re technically also vintage. On the plus side, it might mean we finally qualify for having a woman come round on Mondays with seven frozen dinners to last us the whole week, which would enable MORE TIME ON THE INTERNET.

What’s this week’s pudding, Janet?

sega advert scans 1

“Here’s a couple/three scans I took from a stack of old comics from the 80’s and 90’s. As they are SEGA, you’ll do a better job than I at posting them in an ‘amusing’ fashion.”

sega advert scans 2

“I have nothing at all interesting to say about them. I apologise for the lack of sexual imagery or narcotic references. I apologise that they refer to the little known ‘Genesis’ Console, whatever that was” – Dr H.

sega advert scans 3

It’s reached a point where we also have nothing interesting to say about them either. We could relay the anecdote about going into WHSmith every lunch time to feel the box of Streets of Rage but never actually buying it and then being retrospectively happy about that when we played it on the Mega CD compilation several years later and realised that it wasn’t very good anyway (The End), but that’s not exactly a dinner party classic.

SEGA HAD BIT-PART IN MOMENTOUS SPORTING MOMENT

No, we didn’t notice this at the time. But then again, at the time (1995) we didn’t have to spend all day looking out for anything that said or looked like or hinted at SEGA for subsequent putting on the internet.

This first image isn’t the video. This is a screencapture from the video, so don’t make an idiot out of yourself by clicking away on it and swearing when nothing happens:

sega-eric-cantona

“So have you ever noticed the AMAZING (hand-drawn!!11) SEGA banner in Cantona’s legendary roundhouse kick performance? No? Awesome! Another update done” – Mr Fab.

This is the video. Click this one to remember when football and video games were both more interesting and unpredictable than they are now.

FORGOTTEN ULALA ARTWORK FROM JAPANESE MAGAZINE

Glen found this. This magazine has been in his possession for many years, yet has only recently been rediscovered following what would appear to be a bit of a clear-out and, perhaps, some sort of life-reappraisal.

ulala magazine cover 1

“On the reverse side is a poster of Ulala that has been on my wall. Then it was under my bed for a while. Then just the other day I moved my bed for the first time in a long time. And then I had to find my camera” – Glen.

ulala magazine cover 2

We can only imagine with horror what other items were lurking beneath Glen’s bed.

ulala magazine cover 3

A sock.

ulala magazine cover 4

Maybe an old t-shirt.

ulala magazine cover 5

Possibly, for comic effect, it may have been better to end on a close-up of whatever that Mickey Mouse-like thing is, rather than the bottom.

SATURNS, ETC

If you can’t be bothered to flesh out the sign for your own business, you obviously haven’t got the mental strength to make it a success.

megagames-morecambe

“Here’s a photo of Megagames in Morecambe. It says they buy and sell ‘Saturns etc’ but as they appear to have closed down I couldn’t check. Perhaps they were unable to keep up with demand?” – Paul, Lancaster.

RANDOM PHOTO FROM THE PAST: DONINGTON, 1993

Got sent this. There’s a low-res version of it on the internet, but here it is all proper. It is from SEGA’s glory fortnight, back in 1993, when it sponsored the (a) Formula One (event).

And that was when people watched Formula One, and when Ayrton Senna was the best. Happy days.

donington f1 1993

“The SEGA Europe marketing budget for 1991-1997 got all spent in, well, 1993. In Donington” – F.
